Good evening to you all! I hope you were able to get some rest and relaxation this weekend. Welcome to the first edition of Silver Linings Sunday, where I’ll share motivational stories and tips to empower all us ladies 40 and beyond. Tonight’s post consists of a story about a tip.
I confess – my affair with makeup began very early, even as a wide-eyed five-year-old. I still cherish those moments watching my mother meticulously “put her face on,” and yes, I was granted occasional “makeovers,” involving rouge and lipstick. That’s when the enchantment truly began.
The anticipation of wearing makeup “full-time” grew as my thirteenth birthday approached, and oh, what an awesome day it was. An abundant treasure trove of Covergirl products and a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft guided me into this wonderful world of transformation. Just for fun I’m throwing in these magazine advertisements for Love’s Baby Soft and Cover Girl from 1984. Do any of you remember these?

We’ve all heard the saying “less is more”. Those were the words my mother used when she was teaching me about makeup application later that day. She was so right, although I couldn’t see at the time. I spent much of my teen years tight lining with entirely too much eyeliner. I had no idea it was making my eyes look smaller!
Check out the picture of me and my sweet mom when I graduated from high school. Don’t even get me started on those glasses!!!! Actually, I think that style is back in. The second picture is me and my friend Jennifer at prom. I’m the one on right thinking I’m all that with my electric blue eyeliner.

And as a young adult in the 90s, I fell for the thin eyebrow trend and plucked entirely too much. Once again, my mom warned “less is more” along with “they don’t always grow back”. Ugh, she was right.
Here are two pictures from the thin eyebrow era. First, is a picture of my with my awesome parents at my college graduation (miss you, Dad) and the second picture is me refusing to smile for my then-boyfriend. Disclaimer: these are pictures of pictures, so they are not very clear. Hey, I’m a writer, not a graphic designer. 🙂

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand the importance of my mom’s advice when it comes to makeup application. It’s especially true as our skin matures. When we use too much foundation, concealer, or powder, it can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, making them more noticeable.
The skin around our eyes and mouth is especially delicate and prone to wrinkles. When we pile on heavy layers of product, it can weigh down the skin and cause wrinkles to become more pronounced. A lighter application allows the skin to breathe and move more freely, which helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
There are a number of ways to achieve a flawless look with a lighter application of makeup. For example, using a damp beauty blender can help to sheer out foundation and concealer, making it less likely to settle into creases. Using cream or liquid products instead of powder can also help to create a more natural, youthful appearance. I use both of these techniques every time I apply makeup. I also make sure I start with an anti-aging and hydrating moisturizer as a primer. Here are the products I use after applying my moisturizer. When it comes to makeup, I’ve found that embracing the “less is more” philosophy isn’t just about looking younger; it’s about feeling more confident in your skin. It’s about enhancing your natural beauty rather than masking it. Over the years, I’ve learned that makeup should complement your features, not overpower them. It’s a tool to express yourself and enhance your unique beauty, not to hide behind layers of product.
Moreover, this approach to makeup has taught me valuable lessons about self-care and self-acceptance. Embracing a lighter makeup routine has encouraged me to prioritize skincare and overall wellness (sunscreen is essential). After all, a healthy complexion is the best canvas for any makeup look.
My journey with makeup has been one of learning and growth. From early experiments with bold colors to discovering the beauty of a subtle, natural look, I’ve come to appreciate the artistry and empowerment that makeup can provide. So, here’s to embracing the beauty of simplicity and letting our natural radiance shine through!
Thank you for joining me on this Silver Linings Sunday. I look forward to sharing more stories, tips, and inspiration with you in the weeks to come. Remember, age is just a number, and beauty knows no bounds! And stay away from tightlining your eyes with electric blue liner! 🙂
