It’s time for Tuesday’s Tips & Tricks! Today, I’ll be sharing a new trend in eye makeup. Actually, it’s an old trend but you know what they say, “everything old is new again”, and we know how that becomes more apparent with each trip we make around the sun. The trend I’m talking about is blue eyeshadow and mascara! Yes, you heard me right.
No longer relegated to the 1980s, blue eye makeup is the hottest (coolest) color of the season according to what people are searching for on Pinterest. I’m here with some tips on how to incorporate blue into your eye makeup routine without looking like you’re stuck in the past.
Here are my top 10 tips:
Embrace Shimmer: Ditch the heavy matte blues of the 80s and opt for shades with a subtle shimmer or satin finish. This adds dimension and flatters mature eyelids. Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow in Charged is a great one to try!
Sheer it Out: Layer sheer washes of blue instead of going for a completely opaque look. This creates a more youthful and buildable effect. NYX Ultimate Glowshots Liquid Eyeshadow in Blueberry Bank is a great option.
Smokey with a Twist: Recreate a smokey eye with a modern twist. Use a deep teal or navy blue blended out with browns or grays for a sultry yet sophisticated look. Check out ColourPop Pressed Shadow in Backstage.
Play with Placement: Apply blue eyeshadow strategically. Try a pop of blue on the outer corner for a subtle hint or blend it into the crease for a more dramatic effect.
Line in Brown or Charcoal: Brown or charcoal eyeliner defines the eyes without being too harsh. You can still use blue liner as an accent on the lower lash line but keep it thin. Check out ColourPop Crème Gel Liner in Ventura Blvd.
Highlight the Brow Bone: Balance the blue with a touch of shimmery highlighter on the brow bone. This brightens the eye area and adds a youthful touch. ColourPop Shadow Palette in On Cloud Blue is a great option.
Focus on Lashes: Great lashes complete any eye look. Use a volumizing mascara or even consider lash extensions for extra oomph. If you prefer, you can even try a blue mascara like L’Oreal Original Volume Building Mascara in Cobalt Blue.
Keep the Rest Simple: Blue eyeshadow can be the star of the show. Opt for a neutral lip and a soft blush to avoid looking overdone.
Consider Your Skin Tone: Warmer skin tones can rock copper blues and bronzes, while cooler tones look amazing with sapphire and teal shades.
Inspiration is Key: There are tons of tutorials online specifically for mature eyes and blue eyeshadow. Look for videos by makeup artists like beauty industry veteran and YouTuber Caroline Hirons.
Most importantly, have fun! Makeup is about expressing yourself. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what makes you feel confident and beautiful. And, of course, these are just tips and I say, if you feel confident, wear it!
