$50 a Week for Dinner Challenge: Family of 3

Welcome to my $50 a week for dinner challenge!

Can a family of 3 (including a 14 year old with a hollow leg) eat dinner on just $50 a week? Read on to see.

With the price of groceries still on the rise and being a one-income family at the moment, my husband and I have been trying to save money. One place we started was our grocery budget. So, we challenged ourselves to set our dinner budget to $50.

Things to note: the $50 was budgeted just for dinners and does not include paper products or lunch and breakfast. In addition, we had enough food for leftovers two of the nights.

Our weekly dinner menu

  1. Sunday: Grilled chicken breast with steamed asparagus and baked sweet potatoes
  2. Monday: Hamburgers & homemade fries
  3. Tuesday: Beef tacos, pico de gallo, chips, & guacamole
  4. Wednesday: BBQ chicken pizza with side salad (romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots) with ranch dressing
  5. Thursday: Tacos (leftovers)
  6. Friday: Hamburgers and fries (leftovers)

Grocery list

Walmart:

Asparagus – $3.77

Romaine lettuce – $2.13

Sweet potatoes (3) – $2.98

Note: I came in under budget partially because I did not have to purchase tomatoes, white onions, and jalapeño peppers since my mom grows them in her garden. We also already had the ingredients for the pizza dough.
